Health Support Classes

The Henry County YMCA strives to promote overall wellness for our members and our entire community. The following evidence-based initiatives are designed to increase health outcomes for our friends and neighbors. To sign up for any of these programs, contact Kelsay Smith at ksmith@henrycountyymca.org.

Diabetes Prevention Program

Diabetes is a chronic disease that causes blood sugar levels to rise higher than normal. Diabetes affects more than 29 million people. A condition called prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. More than 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk of developing diabetes… 89% of them don’t even know they’re at risk. Diabetes has no cure, but prediabetes can be reversed.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a small group that helps people with prediabetes eat healthier, increase their physical activity and lose weight, which can delay or even prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Benefits include:

  • Y membership during the program (based on attendance)
  • Free sessions with a personal trainer
  • Free blood tests through Henry Community Health

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is offered as a no cost program to participants. The focus of this program is to help people impacted by a cancer diagnosis enhance their health and fitness as well as rebuild their strength.

The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program is a place where cancer survivors can get back on their feet and be a part of a small, supportive group of people.

Program details:

  • 12 weeks long
  • Two 90-minute sessions a week
  • Sessions include cardio conditioning, strength training, balance, and flexibility exercises
  • Sessions will be held in the YMCA Wellness Center

Enhance®Fitness

Enhance®Fitness is a group exercise program for older adults that uses simple, easy-to-learn movements that motivate individuals to stay active throughout their lives.

Participants experience more energy, better balance, increased strength, more flexibility, greater range of motion, better sleep, and improved overall well-being. Additionally, research shows that participants lower health care costs by around $1,000 each year.

Those with chronic conditions such as arthritis can participate worry-free, knowing they will never have to do anything that hurts. Chairs are available for support if necessary, and participants can use weights to increase intensity if desired.
